German Shorthaired Pointer Craigslist – Safety Matthias Farley always wanted a dog. But growing up in Charlotte, North Carolina, that wasn’t really practical.
“We always had our house,” she says. “There were nine people in the one-bathroom house, including the parents. So pets weren’t high on the priority list.”

“At one point we had parrots, a couple of birds. They were very annoying. We had to clean the cage, so we realized that we didn’t really want pets. We had fish at different times, we think it would be a good idea, but not to play with fish get.”

“I’ve always wanted a German Shorthair. My dad grew up in New Jersey, so they went hunting all the time. And my grandparents had them and I’ve seen pictures of them,” she says.
“I’m like, ‘What dog is that?’ This is the most beautiful dog I have ever seen. Oh, it’s a German Shorthair. I was seven or eight years old and I said, ‘I want one of those'”.
“My roommate had a dog and he ended up going and taking the dog with him. He was a German Shepherd/Black Lab mix. He was awesome. He basically raised him. I’m still kind of salty that he took him.”

“So, she left and I was really sad and one day I was looking at Craigslist and I hit the update button and it said an 11-day-old German Shorthair Pointer puppy and I was like, ‘Ok. I’m going.””
“I drove there this weekend. I chose him because he had the fewest places. I drove back five times to see him before he was eight weeks old,” she says.
Farley named her puppy Harper. He couldn’t wait to bring her home. And when she finally did, she quickly realized that, like having a baby, having a puppy is a life-changing experience.

“It’s really, really hard to leave them,” he says. “I probably lost a few friends who brought him. My friends pulled me and I boxed and I went outside and I heard him cry. I was like, “You guys can just go.” So, I didn’t do anything.”
“He’s like the best dog ever,” she says. “He’s really, really cute. We take him hunting all the time, I’ve never trained him and he’s a beast. People ask, ‘Where did you train him?’ And I’m like, ‘I just stayed in the basement. and he threw a toy and made a speaker after the sound of a gun and went after him. I didn’t pay a cent.”
Harper stayed with Farley’s brother and a few friends as he moved and tried to start his NFL career. He trained for the draft in Chicago, went to Arizona as an undrafted free agent and came to Indianapolis in September.

Farley met Harper a few weeks ago, and shortly after, he made the same mistake he did when he kidnapped her.
“So, I did the cardinal sin of looking on Craigslist – there are always puppies, so I go look at them. Said a German Shorthair puppy. It was about 45 minutes away. And I was like, ‘Ahhh… I’m just going to go see them.’ So I went and looked and he came back with me.”
“I put him in the crate and I put him right next to him in the crate. He doesn’t even cry. He just does what he does. So it’s a good situation,” he says.

“On paper it’s a bad decision. Bringing him on paper was also a bad decision,” he says. “But it was the best decision I ever made.”

The extraordinary versatility of the German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) may explain its popularity—even fame—in the 19th and 20th centuries. This breed of dog was introduced in many works of fiction by authors known as intelligent, agile and faithful companion of the heroes of the stories.

Before this time of fame and favor, the GSP was bred to be an excellent hunting dog. It is uniquely suited to game birds and small game as both a retriever and a pointer. It is even a competent tracker for deer hunters. During World War II, German Shorthaired Pointers were so highly prized that they were smuggled with other valuables such as jewelry and artwork to avoid confiscation in Nazi Germany.
With GSP’s intelligence, reliability and athletic talents, there is probably no better hunting companion. But the elegant and athletic German Shorthair bird also makes a great family pet. These energetic dogs are very social and really work to please their human families. They are very trainable and good with both praise and food.
“Enthusiastic” is a good adjective to describe the personality of the German Shorthair. They are intelligent and cheerful in a stimulating and nurturing environment. GSP is not an outside dog and does not like to be left alone. These dogs can experience severe separation anxiety with long periods of being away from their human family. Bred to serve, they crave communication and purpose. They are not known to be irritable or aggressive, but will bully strangers in an attempt to protect the family.

They are good with children but can be too energetic for very young children. When properly socialized and groomed, the GSP is curious. It is important to set boundaries for your German Shorthaired Pointer, as they may wander off to explore what lies outside their immediate surroundings. They also tend to get along well with other dogs. However, due to their exceptional hunting instincts, other small family pets such as rabbits or guinea pigs should be kept away from your GSP, at least until they are properly trained not to hunt them.
The German Shorthair is a hardy, athletic and therefore quite adaptable breed. They are
