“I think it’s a really neat partnership between a dog and a human … and sometimes you don’t have all the things that come with humans, and you have a dog to adopt,” Seeberg said.
But Seaburg hasn’t been able to see them since the accident, so a visit from Denver is welcome.
Owner Diane Carver has been a therapy dog handler in Sanford for 9 months. He says this three-year-old golden retriever loves his job.

“He’s great. He puts the scarf on and he knows he’s going to work,” handler Diane Carver said.
“Most of them are so happy to see them, even the ones who are really sick, say thank you, thank you when you leave,” Carver says.
“When she visits, she goes to the person, turns around, sits at their feet, sometimes sits at their feet and says I’m ready to pet,” owner Beth Gernberg said.

Gernberg has been a handler for 9 years and says therapy dogs bring a different kind of healing to patients.
“I think it’s best to do whatever therapy the dogs do. Sometimes there are sad situations, and it gives people a chance to go with the dog,” said Zernberg.
Whether it’s a good day or a bad day, these dogs will try their best to make everyone laugh.

“Pet therapy is one of the most exciting programs for patients because they get to cuddle with a good dog. Dogs can bring comfort to patients, they can bring companionship,” said Becca Connor, manager of volunteer services at Sanford.
In addition to hospital visits, these therapy dogs also visit people in hospice, assisted living and Sanford Children’s Hospital.SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – It has been more than two years since the pandemic began, a time that has had a lasting impact on many lives. While some of those changes have been challenging, other post-pandemic additions have added a lot of fun.
“She was a very positive thing that gave the kids something to do and something they could do together,” Van Stedum said. “I have three teenagers … when they’re home together every day, it’s exciting … so it’s been a good thing for them.

“It’s unbelievable, everyone that asked actually wanted a dog. It wasn’t a matter of, oh, I want a dog or what have you, we want a dog now,” said Brittney Werink, owner of Doodles and Doors.
During the puppy epidemic of 2020, breeders were flooded with orders from all over the country.
“It was crazy, there was talk about the cubs we had, we were going to get the next litter, and there was talk about it,” Werink said. “It was intense.”

The demand was so great that breeders of all sizes could charge almost anything for a puppy and people still have lines on their waiting lists.
The epidemic puppy boom allowed Doodles and Dors, a small family business in rural South Dakota, to expand their facility.
“In 2021, we tried to build a better, bigger building to make the dogs more comfortable,” Veurrink said.

Although the puppy boom has slowed, the rise of new pets during the pandemic continues to have a major impact on many animal sectors.
“We probably take 10 to 25 calls from people asking if we’re accepting new clients,” said Kennedy Hyde with Glamor Paws Pet Grooming.
“We’re fully booked for the rest of this year and we’re through May 2021,” Hyde said.

“Because these puppies are old and they’re still here, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s one to two weeks before a routine vaccination appointment,” said Sioux Falls veterinarian Dr. Sarah Hofer.
“I’ve heard you sit in the emergency room for four hours before you get seen,” Hofer said.
South Central Veterinary Hospital Dr. Sarah Hofer says she has nearly tripled her client list since 2020, with many epidemic puppy owners coming in for the same concerns.

“There’s definitely some separation anxiety, their owners have gone back to the office and the dogs don’t know how to act when they’re home alone,” Hofer said.
This is a big reason why the demand for dog boarding in Sioux Falls has increased dramatically.
“We have a long waiting list for our daycare even after opening the second building,” said Allison Wyant with Paws Pet Resort. “We’ve talked to a lot of parents and customers who got their dog during the pandemic, and they want a place where it can play and hang out during the day.”

“Allowing a place where well-trained dogs can be raised gives parents and dogs confidence to live well together,” Wyant said.
Proof that adding pets to many families during a pandemic does more than boost morale in a lonely, challenging time.
“It’s not a one or two year thing, it’s not like the end of the epidemic and then we’re done. It’s a lifetime commitment to taking care of this animal,” Wyant said.

The Sioux Area Humane Society says many pet owners have taken that commitment seriously because the number of surrendered pets hasn’t seen a big increase in the past two years.
Through all the challenges of the past two years, these pets are a bright reminder of the goodness that came at this unique time in history. Although now teenagers, they still bring years of joy to the families they are a part of during the pandemic.
Vets are preparing for the continued impact of the pandemic puppies throughout their lives, and as the puppies become senior citizens a decade later, the need for health care will be even greater. “This is our third year. It’s a way for people to come out with their dogs, have a great dog-themed event and raise money for local dogs in need,” said Donovan Miner, events coordinator for Remedy Brewing Company.

“All the money goes to medical bills. “Last year our medical bills were over $90,000,” Wade said.

The total bill for those operations is expected to approach $4,000. Wade says they can’t do it without companies like Remedy.

“The number one goal is to get the dogs adopted, so it’s like a meet and greet so they can see the dogs. All the dogs are on the website so they can go on the website and meet them here in person, ” Wade said.
